The following online training resources are listed according to the VA Skill Competencies:

 

General Autism

Autism Society of America’s 30-minute on-line course provides an introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorder and is aligned with the General Autism area in the VAC skill competency publication.

The Professional Development Center in Autism offers Autism 101 which is aligned with the VAC General Autism area in the VAC skill competency publication.

The VCU Autism Center for Excellence (VCU-ACE) offers an online course on Foundations of Autism Spectrum Disorders, which is free to residents of VA.  This course will provide participants with an understanding of the primary characteristics of ASD, which include impairments in communication and social development and the presence of repetitive patterns of behavior. The course discusses the impact ASD has on the person as well as the family unit. The course also provides an overview of learning styles, the history, cause, and early signs of ASD. 

Environmental Structure and Visual Supports

Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence (OCALI) serves families, educators, and professionals working with students with autism and low-incidence disabilities, including autism spectrum disorders, multiple disabilities, orthopedic impairments, other health impairments, and traumatic brain injuries.  Users must register to access individual trainings on: visual supports, home base, and structured work systems & activity organization. These align with the individualization & support strategies area of the VAC skill competency publication.

Behavior

The VCU Autism Center for Excellence (VCU-ACE) offers an online course on Strategies for Supporting Positive Behaviors in Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.  This course is designed to provide educators and family members with skills and knowledge needed to support students with ASD in the educational setting. The course provides participants with information regarding the impact core deficits of ASD have on the person and how they may lead to interfering behavior.

 

Sensory Motor Development

University of Kansas Medical Center’s introduction to Sensory Processing. This online training aligns with the sensory section of the VAC skill competency publication.

Interactive Collaborative Autism Network (ICAN) provides a Sensory module that is aligned to the Sensory Motor section of the VAC skill competency publication. (CLICK ON LECTURE TO ACCESS INFORMATION)

Sensory Processing Disorder site contains information that defines sensory processing disorder and its subtypes. It is aligned to the sensory motor development section of the VAC skill competency publication.

Independence

Transition Coalition provides information, support, and professional development on topics related to the transition from school to adult life for youth with disabilities.
